Hot Air Quarterly’s Summer Issue 2010

The stunning image above, the cover art for the summer issue of The Hot Air Quarterly, is by artist Joe Draegert. Draegert is a well-known American painter who has won a number of awards, including the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome in 1978 and a full fellowship to the prestigious Yale Summer School for the Arts in 1967 while he was studying for his undergraduate degree from the Kansas City Art Institute. His work is on display at MOMA SF, the Oakland Museum in Oakland, and the Crocker Museum in Sacramento. While obtaining his MFA from the University of California at Davis, Draegert studied with Wayne Thiebaud and Roland Petersen. He taught art for eleven years at Shasta College and is currently represented by the Erickson Fine Art Gallery in Healdsburg, California. We are thrilled and honored to be showcasing his masterful and scrumptious work.

This issue includes a gripping story about a wildfire that takes place in an area similar to Shasta County, by Michaela Carlock, a true story by Peter Wright about a hapless WWII ship caught in a situation similar to that related by Sebastian Junger in A Perfect Storm, a moving account of author and sailor Clark Beek’s humanitarian mission to the Dominican Republic, told in his inimitable, idiosyncratic style, and some delightfully quirky short shorts by Wistar Watts Murray. The issue also includes thought-provoking poetry by Bill Siemer and Larry Harris, as well as enchanting work from new (to us) poets Kay S. Lindsey and Roberta Stone. And the fifteenth installment of The Listener, of course.

The Hot Air Quarterly was profiled in this month’s (August) issue of Enjoy magazine, in a wonderful article by Kimberly Carlson if you’d like to check it out. It starts on page 57. A limited number of copies will be distributed this week to The Shasta County Arts Council, Sue’s Java Cafe, the Redding Library, Pacific West Graphics, and the Westside Cafe. Hot Air will unfortunately not be able to participate personally in the August Art Hop, but do look for extra copies at Infinite Designs, Vintage, and the Kimberly Nicole Boutique. The bulk of copies will be available at our reception and reading August 28 at Pacific West Graphics from 7 – 9 pm. Tasty refreshments will be provided.

We will also be contributing some copies to the September 11 Writers Forum reading for Art Hop. And later this month, copies will also be distributed farther afield, to Weaverville, Dunsmuir, Mt Shasta City, and Arcata.

As always, we are on the lookout for talented new writers and poets, so please do contact us at keswickhouse@earthlink.net if you think you might have something for Hot Air. Donations are always welcome, too, to help us keep providing literary offerings to interested readers.

We have another killer issue! And we can’t wait to share it with you.
